Medical cannabis is opening new doors for healing, especially for those living with ostomies. At the recent UOAA National Conference, we had the honor of sharing insights on its potential to improve the quality of life for this inspiring community.
Speaking at the UOAA National Conference
This past month, Dr. Joseph Rosado and I had the privilege of speaking on behalf of DocMJ at the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) National Conference in Orlando, Florida.
It was a true honor to be part of this national gathering, which brings together patients, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals who share a common mission: to support the ostomy community and improve quality of life.
A New Conversation: Medical Cannabis for Ostomates
Our session explored a subject that is gaining more recognition in medicine—how medical cannabis helps ostomy patients. While cannabis is often discussed for chronic pain or cancer-related symptoms, its potential for ostomates is less well-known but incredibly meaningful.
Understanding the Challenges Faced by Ostomy Patients
Many people with ostomies face ongoing challenges such as chronic abdominal pain, phantom rectum syndrome, social anxiety, depression, and even post-surgical anxiety.
Traditional treatments often fail to provide relief, leaving patients seeking alternative options. Medical marijuana, through its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, may help regulate pain, reduce inflammation, ease anxiety, and support emotional wellness.
For many, it’s not just about managing symptoms; it’s about restoring dignity, comfort, and a greater sense of normalcy in daily life.
A Powerful Response from the Community
The response from the UOAA community was inspiring. The room was filled with thoughtful and inquisitive questions about safety, science, dosing, and navigating access.
Many participants expressed excitement about the potential role of cannabis for ostomy in their care, and others shared personal stories of struggles that these options might ease.
That energy and curiosity made it clear: patients want education, compassionate guidance, and safe pathways to explore medical cannabis.
DocMJ’s Mission to Empower Patients
That is precisely where DocMJ comes in. Our mission is to make medical cannabis accessible to patients who can benefit, including those living with an ostomy.
We connect patients with compassionate physicians who understand their unique medical needs, provide education on how cannabis works with the body, and guide them through the process of becoming certified in their state.
This includes addressing essential considerations such as mixing medical marijuana with other medications, ensuring patients have safe, personalized guidance. At DocMJ, we believe patients deserve not just care, but empowerment—the ability to make informed decisions about their health and quality of life.
Insight and Hope from Dr. Rosado
Dr. Rosado, with his medical expertise and patient-centered approach, brought tremendous insight to the discussion. Together, we worked to not only share the science but also to offer hope and practical steps for those who may be considering cannabis for chronic pain or other uses related to cannabis and ostomy challenges.
Gratitude and the Power of Education
We are deeply grateful to the UOAA for the opportunity to share this important message. The enthusiasm and openness of the attendees reminded us why education matters so much in breaking down stigma and expanding access to safe, evidence-based natural pain management and ostomy support options.
DocMJ: Supporting Patients on the Journey to Healing
At DocMJ, we remain committed to being by patients’ sides every step of the way. Whether it’s managing pain, easing anxiety, or supporting overall well-being, we are here to help people explore medical cannabis as a tool for healing and resilience.
