Why Staying Current With Georgia Requirements Matters

Georgia’s medical cannabis program follows two separate timelines. A physician must complete your Medical Cannabis Certification annually, while the state-issued Medical Cannabis card is valid for five years. An unexpired card does not remove the annual certification requirement.

Your registry information must also remain accurate. Changes involving your address, identification, caregiver, residency, or eligibility may require an update by your physician or assistance from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Understanding who handles each part of the process can prevent missed steps. Your physician evaluates and certifies you when medically appropriate. DPH reviews registry information, collects the state fee, and issues the card.

Georgia Certification and Renewal Support

DocMJ provides physician-led evaluations for Georgia residents seeking an initial certification or returning for their annual appointment. Telemedicine appointments allow eligible patients to meet with a Georgia physician without traveling to an office.

During the visit, the physician reviews your current condition, medical history, relevant diagnostic information, and continued eligibility. Georgia leaves the certification decision to the physician’s medical judgment, so previous approval does not guarantee another certification.

When certification is appropriate, the physician completes the required form and enters or updates your information in the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. Certification is an authorization under Georgia’s program. It is not a prescription.

DocMJ handles the medical evaluation and certification-related steps. The Georgia Department of Public Health controls state verification, card payment, and card issuance.

Map

Annual Certification and Five-Year Card Renewal

Georgia patients must distinguish between their annual medical certification and the expiration date on their physical card.

Annual physician certification: Your physician must complete and submit a Medical Cannabis Certification each year. The physician confirms an established relationship with you, reviews your medical history and current condition, and determines whether continued certification is medically appropriate.

Five-year Medical Cannabis card: DPH issues the physical card for a five-year term. When the expiration date approaches, you must consult with your physician and complete the renewal process required by the state.

You do not receive a new physical card after every annual physician appointment. You also should not wait five years between physician certifications simply because the date printed on your card has not passed.

Older cards displaying the name “Low THC Oil Registry Card” remain valid until their printed expiration date. Replacement and newly issued cards use the updated Medical Cannabis program name.

The 5% THC Limit (Legal Definitions)

Georgia no longer uses a 5% THC concentration cap as the central possession standard for registered patients and caregivers.

Current Georgia guidance permits a registered patient or caregiver with an active card to possess medical cannabis containing up to 12,000 milligrams of THC in total. Individual product packages may contain no more than 1,200 milligrams of THC.

The older 5% language came from Georgia’s former low THC oil framework. Patients may still encounter that wording on old webpages, documents, or unexpired cards, but it does not accurately describe the expanded program that took effect July 1, 2026.

Registration does not legalize every form of marijuana or unrestricted possession. Georgia’s protections apply only to registered patients and caregivers who possess authorized products within the state limits.

Restricted Routes of Administration (Oil Focus)

Oil remains an authorized form of medical cannabis in Georgia, but the current program is not limited to oil.

Licensed Georgia facilities may manufacture regulated oils, tinctures, transdermal patches, lotions, capsules, ingestible products, and vaporizer products. State law continues to prohibit smoking cannabis and the production of cannabis candies and cookies.

Authorized products must be purchased from a dispensary licensed by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission or an independent pharmacy licensed by the Georgia Board of Pharmacy. The dispensing location verifies the patient’s identification and active card status before completing a purchase.

A physician certification establishes eligibility for the state program. It does not guarantee that a particular product, strength, format, or route of administration will be medically appropriate for every patient.

Legal Letters

A Georgia Medical Cannabis card proves that a patient or caregiver is registered under the state program. The physician certification documents the medical decision that supports that registration. Neither document provides universal legal protection.

A standard DocMJ appointment does not automatically include a separate letter for employment, housing, court proceedings, travel, disability accommodations, firearms, or another legal matter.

Patients who need a specific medical form should confirm whether it falls within the physician’s role. Questions about workplace protections, federal restrictions, criminal law, or how the program applies to a particular legal situation should be directed to an attorney or the responsible government agency.

Who May Continue or Renew Their Georgia Registration

Continued certification depends on current legal eligibility and the physician’s medical judgment.

Adult patients must be Georgia residents and have at least one condition recognized by the state. The certifying physician must have a principal practice location in Georgia, maintain a bona fide physician-patient relationship, assess the patient’s medical history and current condition, and perform or review appropriate diagnostic information.

Previous certification does not create an automatic right to another certification. The physician must decide whether the patient still meets the medical requirements at the time of the appointment.

A registered caregiver receives a separate card and must keep their own identification and registry information current. Each caregiver card is subject to the state’s application and payment requirements.

How the Georgia Certification and Renewal Process Works

  • Schedule your appointment.
Choose an available telemedicine or other eligible appointment with DocMJ.
  • Prepare your information.
Have valid identification and relevant medical information available. Records, diagnostic reports, medication details, or treatment history may help the physician assess your current condition.
  • Meet with the physician.
Discuss your medical history, current symptoms, prior certification, and continued eligibility with a qualified Georgia physician.

  • Receive the physician’s decision.
When certification is medically appropriate, the physician completes the annual certification and files it in your medical record. Approval is not automatic.
  • Update the state registry.
The physician enters or updates the required patient and caregiver information and uploads the necessary identification documents to the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
  • Complete the state card steps.
DPH verifies the information and sends payment instructions when the submission is complete. After payment is processed, the state advises patients to allow up to 10 business days for card delivery.

DocMJ controls the physician appointment and certification submission. State review, payment processing, and card delivery remain under DPH control.

State Fees and Separate Appointment Costs

The DocMJ appointment fee and Georgia’s state card fee are separate expenses.

DPH currently charges $30 for each Medical Cannabis card. Paying through the state’s secure online portal adds a $3.75 service fee. Health insurance does not cover the state card charge.

The DocMJ fee covers the physician-led evaluation and certification-related service. It does not include the DPH card fee or state portal charge. DocMJ offers payment plans, which can make the medical appointment cost easier to manage.

DPH requires payment within 60 days of sending the payment instructions. If payment is not completed within that period, the state may cancel the card and require the patient to contact the physician for reinstatement.

Why Choose DocMJ for Georgia State Rules & Renewals

Physician-led care: DocMJ’s providers have the medical credentials required to evaluate patients and make certification decisions. This keeps the appointment focused on your medical circumstances rather than treating renewal as automatic paperwork.

Experience with changing state requirements: DocMJ was founded in 2016 and has completed more than one million patient visits across multiple states. That experience helps the team explain changing terminology, timelines, and patient responsibilities in clear language.

Clear responsibility at each step: DocMJ explains what the physician completes and what DPH controls. You leave the appointment knowing which action belongs to you, your physician, or the state.

Lower financial risk: Payment plans are available, and DocMJ offers a 100% money-back guarantee when a patient does not qualify. The guarantee applies to the medical qualification decision, not state fees, state approval, or card delivery.
