Ohio Medical Marijuana Costs Explained

The total cost generally consists of two separate parts: the fee for your medical evaluation and any applicable state registration requirements.

Understanding who charges each fee helps eliminate confusion during the certification process. Your physician’s evaluation fee covers the medical assessment required to determine whether medical marijuana is appropriate for your condition, while any state fees are managed separately by Ohio.

Knowing these costs in advance allows patients to prepare financially and avoid unexpected expenses during the certification process.

1. Our New Patient Evaluation Fee

DocMJ’s standard fee for an Ohio new patient or transfer evaluation is $139.

The fee covers a private appointment with an Ohio physician who holds an active Certificate to Recommend. During the evaluation, the physician reviews your medical history, qualifying condition, symptoms, medications, and previous treatments to determine whether medical marijuana may be appropriate.

If you qualify, the physician enters your recommendation into the Ohio Medical Marijuana Patient and Caregiver Registry. The evaluation fee is paid to DocMJ for the physician appointment and is separate from dispensary purchases or other medical cannabis expenses.

2. Annual Patient Registration Fee

Ohio currently charges $0 to activate or renew a patient registration in the Medical Marijuana Patient and Caregiver Registry. Patients no longer have to pay a separate annual state fee for their digital registry card.

After your physician enters an approved recommendation, you must still follow the state’s instructions to access your registry account and activate your digital card. Although registration is free, completing this step is required before you can participate as an active medical marijuana patient.

State policies may change, so review the latest information from the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control when completing your registration.

What Is Included in the DocMJ Evaluation Fee?

The $139 standard evaluation fee covers the medical appointment required to determine whether you qualify for an Ohio medical marijuana recommendation.

Your appointment includes:

  • Review of your medical history and available records
  • Discussion of your symptoms and previous treatments
  • Evaluation of your qualifying condition
  • Time to ask the physician questions
  • An Ohio medical marijuana recommendation if approved
  • Entry into the state registry after approval

The fee does not cover cannabis products purchased from a dispensary. It also does not guarantee approval because every recommendation depends on the physician’s medical judgment.
