How the Georgia Certification Process Works

1. Book Your Appointment

Choose an available telemedicine appointment and complete the requested patient information. Gather relevant records, identification, medication details, and questions before your visit.

2. Meet With the Physician

The doctor reviews your medical history, current condition, symptoms, medications, diagnostic information, and supporting records. You will have an opportunity to explain your concerns and ask questions about Georgia’s program.

3. Receive the Doctor’s Decision

The physician decides whether certification is medically appropriate. Georgia physicians are not required to certify every patient, and the decision must be based on the doctor’s independent medical judgment.

4. Complete the State Card Process

When the physician certifies you, the required information is entered into the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. The Georgia Department of Public Health verifies the submission and emails instructions for paying the state card fee.

5. Receive Your Registry Card

After DPH processes your payment, the card is mailed by UPS to the address on file. A signature is required for delivery. The state advises patients to allow up to 10 business days after payment processing.

Important Information for Georgia Patients

Georgia Uses a Medical Cannabis Patient Registry

People may search for a Georgia medical marijuana card, Low THC Oil Card, medical card, or marijuana doctor. The state’s current credential is the Medical Cannabis Registry Card, which is issued through the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.

The program was formerly called the Low THC Oil Registry. Existing Low THC Oil Registry Cards remain valid until their printed expiration dates, but replacement and newly issued cards use the updated Medical Cannabis program name.

Certification and Card Issuance Are Separate

DocMJ provides the physician evaluation and certification when the doctor determines that a patient qualifies. The Georgia Department of Public Health manages the registry, verifies the submitted information, collects the card fee, and issues the Registry Card.

DocMJ is not a dispensary and does not sell medical cannabis products.

The Card and Certification Follow Different Timelines

The Georgia Medical Cannabis Registry Card is valid for five years. However, physicians must complete an annual medical certification for registered patients. A valid card does not remove the requirement for the yearly physician review.

State Card Cost and Delivery

The Georgia Department of Public Health charges $30 for each Registry Card. Patients who pay through the state’s online portal are also charged a $3.75 service fee.

After payment is processed, DPH sends the card by UPS and requires a signature at delivery. Patients without a permanent secure address, or those who use a P.O. Box, may have the card sent to a participating county health department.

A Registry Card Does Not Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Georgia’s program allows registered patients and caregivers to possess authorized medical cannabis within the limits of state law. It does not legalize recreational marijuana, home cultivation, unlicensed sales, or smoking cannabis.

Registered patients may purchase approved products from a dispensary licensed by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission or from an eligible independent pharmacy licensed by the Georgia Board of Pharmacy.

“What is Georgia’s medical marijuana card officially called?”
Georgia officially issues a Medical Cannabis Registry Card. The card is connected to the Georgia Medical Cannabis Patient Registry and proves that a certified patient or caregiver is registered under the state program. Some patients still use the former name, Low THC Oil Registry Card, when discussing an older card.
“How do I apply for a Georgia Medical Cannabis Registry Card?”
You must first receive certification from an eligible Georgia physician. When the physician determines that you qualify, the doctor uploads the required information to the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. DPH then verifies the information and sends instructions for paying for the card.
“What conditions may qualify in Georgia?”
Georgia recognizes specific qualifying conditions under its Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. Current categories include ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, qualifying autism spectrum disorder, most cancers, epidermolysis bullosa, hospice enrollment, Stage III HIV, inflammatory bowel disease, intractable pain, lupus, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, severe peripheral neuropathy, qualifying PTSD, seizure disorders, sickle cell disease, and Tourette’s syndrome.

The physician must determine whether your diagnosis and circumstances meet the state’s requirements.

“Do I need medical records for my appointment?”
Relevant medical records can help the physician understand your diagnosis, symptoms, testing, and previous treatment. Georgia requires the doctor to assess the patient’s medical history and current condition and to perform or review appropriate diagnostic information. The specific documentation needed depends on the patient’s circumstances.
“Does booking an appointment guarantee certification?”
No. Booking, paying for, or completing an appointment does not guarantee certification. Georgia leaves the decision to the physician’s independent medical judgment. DocMJ offers a money-back guarantee when a patient does not qualify.
“How much does the Georgia Registry Card cost?”
